awi Atair, locally called Tawi ‘Atir or the “Well of Birds,” is a spectacular sinkhole situated in Tawi Atair, Mirbat Wilayat, Dhofar Governorate, Oman. Discovered in 1997 by Slovenian researchers alongside Sultan Qaboos University, it ranks among the largest karst sinkholes globally, with a depth of about 211 m and a volume near 975,000 m³. Rich vegetation clings to its steep walls, creating a lush haven for birds. Beneath, cave pools host rare blind cave fish, Garra dunsirei. This iconic natural wonder draws scientists and tourists alike, offering a breathtaking view into geological marvels and biodiversity.
